foreskin & sand question

ok, i'm venturing over here from the postpartum mammas tribe with a question from another mama. many of us have decided to leave our baby boys intact, however, none of us seems to know the answer to this question! lol

what do we do if we take our boys to the beach & they get a little sand under their unretracted foreskin? we can't exactly pull it back to clean it, so how do you get any stray sandgrains out of there?

thanks!
(yay, foreskin!)

    Actually it shouldn't happen.
In babies and young children, the foreskin is attached the glans (head) of the penis just like a fingernail is attached to the finger.
The question is like asking what if the baby gets sand between it's nail and finger.

You might be asking what if some sand gets in the slight opening at the end?
If so, then some water will wash that away (or simply the next time he pees).

Consider it like the hymen of a baby girl, I hope nobody would consider digging around her vagina if you thought there was sand in it?

thanks, brytee. one of my friends has a son whose foreskin does retract a little bit. i think this was her main cause for concern. but i guess, rinse thoroughly, right?

Yeah, they fiddle around enough in the bath, it really just works itself right out :)

Every boy's foreskin will loosen at its own rate- some in early toddlerhood, some not for years and years... as long as he's the only one working on it, it'll be just fine.

I can't imagine a kid who wouldn't do plenty of "rinsing" all on his own. :)

I might add that sand, itself, is inert and harmless.

Assuming the sand doesn't create any discomfort, there's no hurry to get rid of it.

You might do better to worry about flossing the kid's teeth.

well, he's only 14 months, so i think flossing is a bit farther down the road!

            : )

              Same principle, though.

Worry about cotton fiber under his toenails.

              Diesel exhaust in his lungs.

              Whatever.

well, orange... She was asking the "sand" questions on my behalf, a veteran mom of thirteen years... with my uncirc'd boy as my third.

She wasn't asking about tartar, cotton, or exhaust, she was asking about SAND in the foreskin, and was posed as a hypothetical and a what if?
Your response sounded a little snarky, and unnecessary.

Thanks for the advice. I'll go buy him a nice plastic bubble to live in now so that he won't get any sort of foreign substances anywhere on his little body.

                sheesh.

                  Well put.

Please don't take it badly. I'm snarky about almost everything. Most of the 'foreskin problem' discussions I've had in my life have been with people who have it fixed in their mind that the natural world is teeming with magical, invisible, deadly enemies ready to pounce on the human foreskin as their only means of attack; people who, no matter what is explained to them, or how, as long as a live foreskin remains present in the world, something disastrous must inevitably precipitate.

well, since he's playing with his biz CONSTANTLY when he's naked, when we're on the beach he'll be naked, and I'm assuming (no direct experience yet..) that his little sand covered hands will probably get some in there.

If he pees it out, AWESOME! If none gets in there, AWESOME!
      • Intacts have the advantage here

By now I hope the issue turned out to be moot. Actually, I'm surprised parents of circumcised little boys aren't panicking over what happens if sand gets into his peehole, which is a far greater problem for foreskin-less toddlers. Intact boys tend to have a snout that prevents this -- and diaper feces and ammonia, among other irritants -- from reaching the tender mucous membrane of the meatus and urethra.

Out of little girls, circumcised boys and intact boys, it's the third group that is best adapted to roll naked in sandy conditions.
