This time I'm sending her a book and a video. If she does it again, I'm not going to deal with her anymore.... I know a lot of people can't just cut their family out of their lives... but I look very harshly on willfull genital mutilation - especially after you've been educated - and family to me are just people. My suggestion would be to get inside your sister's head. If you can figure out what she really cares about, that might give you an idea of what approach to use.

Remind her that while she may have her opinion, and her husband may have his, eventually their son will grow up, and there's nothing she can do to prevent him from learning the truth. Ask her how she will respond when her son comes to her and demands to know where the rest of his penis is.

If the big guns don't work, pull out the really big guns. Learning the truth about how one was mutilated can be extremely upsetting. What if her son decides to retaliate in kind? Will she be prepared for that? There's no reason to believe that would happen -- but there's no reason to believe it wouldn't. If she has her son circumcised, all bets are off -- there's no way in the world to predict how he will respond.

This is obviously a difficult issue to discuss with your sister. As I see it, though, any words you have to speak in order to protect your nephew from this violence is worth it. Just take care that you retain your credibility. Say one thing that's not true, and someone in her position will latch onto that as proof that you're untrustworthy.

So awesome to find this tribe. My daughter is pregnant and I just had this discussion with my son-in-almost law. I ended up in tears because I feel so strongly about leaving baby boys in tact.
